Things to explore in and around Rome

1 Colosseum

The construction of it began in the early years of the reign of Vespasian (69 AD). It was the part of a very specific political propaganda program: on the place where the artificial pond of Nero’s private house previously stood. The works was completed under the empire of Titus, son of Vespasian. For the inauguration, in 80 AD, 500 beasts were sacrificed in 100 days of celebrations with Domitian successor of Titus.

External structure

It is the largest amphitheater in Rome. The height is about 50 m and the diameter greater than 188 m! The outer ring, entirely in travertine and decorated with half-columns in the Tuscan, Ionic and Corinthian order respectively. The top floor, blind, is decorated with Corinthian pilasters too.

Interior structure

In the past it was possible to access the interior from the arches on the ground floor that gave access to the various internal sectors of the auditorium. Each seat was marked with a number on the entrance ticket (card; in reality the entrance was almost always free). Clearly, there was the entrance of honor for the imperial tribune and others for the personalities – magistrates, Vestals, Priests etc.

It has an area of 22,000 square meters and twenty thousand people can pray there. The emperor Constantine built the indigenous basilica of San Peter’s in around 320 AD. In the area where St. Peter was martyred near the circus of Nero, which in fact, stood nearby. For about a thousand years the Basilica grew and became rich and popular.

3 The Fountain of Trevi (Rome)

It is the most popular and visited fountain of the Rome. In short, this is an amazing creation of stone and water. In addition, it is the only one of the ancient aqueducts continuously in use even nowadays. It is the most famous of the Roman fountains of the history. However, the name of this fountain came from a toponym which was used in 12th century. It is referring to the confluence of three streets in the square. The construction of the latest fountain happened due to Pope Clement XII in 1732. Moreover, there was a competition between major artists of the time. However, there were various projects but finally the architect Nicola was chosen.

Later on Giuseppe completed the construction. However, the last major restoration happened in 2014, thanks to the financial contribution of the Maison Fendi. Definitely, once you are in Rome, do not forget visit this place and throw a coin into the fountain. Because it is said, that if you do so then Rome will call you again.

A quick guide with travel agency in Rome

To get around Rome we recommend using the metropolitan service (faster and avoiding traffic) or the bus service. Using the car, on the other hand, is not recommended due to the constant traffic. The alternative is the taxi. However, these are not entirely cheap. If you want to travel with car you can also consider the different car sharing services that you find on site but beware of traffic!

13 Where to eat in Rome

Walking around the city you will realize how many restaurants and pizzerias there are at every corner, especially in the more touristic areas. The typical Roman cuisine is really very good, so we advise you not to miss the following dishes in the “Rome: what to eat” list: amatriciana, gricia, cacio e pepe and carbonara, four very famous and really tasty first courses; abbacchio alla romana as a main course and mariozzo with cream as a dessert. Avoid the most crowded places with a strong tourist presence. At Garbatella, south of Rome, for example, you will find places with “authentic” Roman cuisine while in the Jewish Ghetto you can taste the artichokes alla giudia.

14 Where to sleep in Rome

For the choice of your hotel in Rome we recommend areas that are not very central and therefore cheaper, but connect with the subway, such as the Colosseum area, Garbatella, etc. The Prati area is very expensive as are the other areas in the center. Rome knows a few days of low season, in the winter or in August. Therefore it is always difficult to book. Move in time.
