Florence is the symbolic city of the Italian Renaissance, which has churches, museums, houses some important artistic treasures. Dante, Petrarca, Boccaccio and Macchiavelli contributed to the literary fame of the city. The artists such as Giotto, Masaccio, Botticelli, Michelangelo and Donatello transformed it into one of the artistic capitals of the world. Historic Florence includes most of the museums, churches and palaces are within walking distance. However, the ideal starting point for visiting the city is undoubtedly Piazza del Duomo. Moreover, the symbol of the city is the tallest building, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo. It is 153 meters long and took almost 170 years to build. In addition, the façade is in Gothic style, in white, green and pink marble. There is a majestic dome inside with a beautiful masterpiece of Filippo Brunelleschi.

Facts

Next to the façade of the Duomo, stands Giotto’s bell tower, 85 meters high, from which you can enjoy a fantastic view of the city. However, it is the Baptistery of San Giovanni, an octagonal building in Romanesque style. It has three bronze doors, masterpieces of Lorenzo Ghiberti and Andrea Pisano. Inside there are mosaics from the 13th and 14th centuries, with scenes from the Old and New Testament. In addition, It is the witness of  important Florentine artists.  Giotto to Brunelleschi, from Vasari to Talenti, from Arnolfo di Cambio to Lorenzo Ghiberti participated here.

Following the lively via is another important square, Piazza della Signoria, the political heart of Florence. Here, since the end of 1200, the Palazzo della Signoria or Palazzo Vecchio, seat of the Municipality of the city with the Tower of Arnolfo. It stands 94 meters high and the Museum. At the entrance of the building, you can see the beautiful copy of Michelangelo’s David. On its right, you can admire the fascinating Loggia dei Lanzi, where famous statues such as the Perseus of Benvenuto Cellini. The Rape of the Sabines of Giambologna is placed here. . In the square there is also the Fountain of Neptune of Ammannati from 1575.
