Things to explore in Florence

1 Duomo of Florence

The most popular site on the list of what to see in Florence is certainly its Duomo, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The construction of the huge Gothic cathedral began in 1296, was consecrated in 1436, and today it can accommodate up to 20,000 people. Its exterior, in green, pink and white marble, has several elaborate doors and statues worth seeing.

Inside, Brunelleschi’s dome is a true masterpiece. Admission to the cathedral is free, and a ticket is enough to climb the 463 steps that lead to the top of the dome (€ 10). This ticket will also allow you to climb Giotto’s Campanile Tower, enter the Baptistery of San Giovanni and the Crypt of Santa REPARATA.

It is around the most famous square in Florence that your city tour will begin. This is the Heart of the historic centre, a real art scene and political centre of the city since the Middle Ages. If the Loggia Della Signoria and its arcaded gallery are on the list of what to see in Florence, the town hall is absolutely to be included in your walks.

The Palazzo was built in the late 13th / early 14th century to house the government offices of the (newly created) Florentine Republic. The architect who gave life to Palazzo was none other than Arnolfo di Cambio, who also designed the Cathedral of Florence. Today Palazzo houses the office of the Mayor of Florence and the City Council, but most of the building serves as a museum. Inside the palace you will find richly decorated public rooms and private apartments.

The Square of Miracles

The so-called Piazza DEI MIRACOLI is actually called Piazza del Duomo on the maps, but we like its more literary name: it was D’Annunzio, in fact, to call as in his novel, the four most important monuments of Pisa and contained in it, namely the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo and the famous Campanile, or the leaning tower, symbol of the city and Italy. Climbing the Tower, if you can stand the 4 meters slope, will offer you a spectacular view.

The Campo Santo Monumental is a place of great historical importance: here was brought by the crusaders the holy land collected on Golgotha. The Cathedral is one of the greatest examples of medieval architecture in Italy, with Arab, Norman, Byzantine and early Christian influences. Finally, the Baptistery, the largest in Europe, has an acoustics that allows you to hear the echo inside.

You have surely heard of one of the protagonists of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno: UGOLINO DELLA GHERARDESCA. At the center of disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines in the Middle Ages, and Dante kept in the circle of traitors of the homeland, the Count was imprisoned and condemned to die of hunger along with his children.

According to legend, UGOLINO ended up eating his children before he died.
